• Philosophy of Mathematics Education


    At Guntersville High School, we believe our mathematics curriculum will produce mathematically proficient students who are prepared to take on the challenges of college and career mathematics in the 21st century.  Through procedural fluency, conceptual understanding, and real-life application, students will learn to use mathematics effectively.  To achieve mathematics literacy, our students will:


    • develop number sense

    • demonstrate procedural fluency with accuracy and precision

    • connect and scaffold interrelated mathematical concepts

    • recognize multiple representation of mathematics

    • acquire conceptual understanding of mathematical concepts

    • communicate mathematics clearly, both verbally and in written form

    • use mathematical tools appropriately and strategically

    • build a plethora of problem solving skills

    • use mathematics to question, investigate, conjecture, critique, argue, and prove

    • apply mathematics to relevant real-life context and situations

    • use mathematics to model mathematical phenomena

    • appreciate the beauty and power of mathematics
